V.0.2 Changelog and few important updates

3 Important issues to start with

1) About the art style mismatch - In the past, I have mainly used a model that was trained on almost a single artist. It would copy their style pretty decently. While I think it was fine when it was just a little demo that I wasn't sure I would even continue, now that I know I will keep developing it, using a model that just copies someone else's style seems incredibly scummy. I switched to a more general one, one based on a wider variety of images and artists. I would love to hear your thoughts about some of the images included in this update, if it turns out many people do NOT like them, I can try new styles or make my base sketches a little more clear and detailed to influence the final output. I will not be going back to the style used in v.0.1 though, and over the next few updates, I will be replacing old images with their newer versions.

2) About the delay and frequency of future updates - First of all, sorry about the huge delay, it was caused mainly by my inexperience and just wrong priorities. I ended up adding things that I later had to take out because they just wouldn't fit the game as is, or I would dedicate way too much time to things that just weren't that important at this stage. If you want details I can happily provide them in the comments, I like to rant. Anyway, I decided to try switching to smaller, more regular updates. One every two weeks to be exact, hopefully, it will result in fewer delays and ease of planning. So, the next update is arriving on the 9th of January (we skipping Christmas).

3) About the bugs - I playtest the game solo, so there is no way I caught every bug that exists in it. I added 2 skills, that would fix the most common ones, if the picture doesn't want to go away or the screen gets dark and stays that way, try them out, they might help. Nonetheless, for these bugs, and for any other problems, please report them in the comments or otherwise inform me of them. Fixing existing features gets priority over anything else so you can expect fast fixes. Although probably not during Christmas, but it's an exception.

CHANGELOG!

- 5 new locations

- Day/Night system

- 5 new scenes, 1 with 3 variations, 1 with 2 variations. Also, treat the Rose scene as a glimpse into the future for now, I drew it, genned it, wrote it, realized it didn't really fit just yet, but left it in since I kinda like it

-A few eye-pleasers here and there

- New activities

- 2 skills for quick bug extermination, please report if you have to use them, the fact that you can fix issues in-game doesn't mean they don't exist and shouldn't be fixed

- You can now hide text boxes with CTRL and ALT keys

Be sure to make a new save. Sorry for the size of this update by the way, the next ones should get slimmer. The next updates will be focused almost entirely on just adding more scenes, the map got bigger, but it's incredibly empty.

So, people are going to have their opinions on AI, and of course, you are using it regardless, so I don't necessarily think it becomes more or less considered "scummy" to base it on a particular art style. I think it would be best to pick a good style, which I think you already have with whoever you're basing the style on, and just keep the art consistent. The only real alternative is to commission or hire an artist, but that depends if you will be making money from this project or are willing to sink a lot of money into said artist.

There are plenty of Visual Novel Games on Itch.io that use generic AI images for their games, but I like that you mostly have a consistent style and would think it best to keep that visual identity.

I think there is a difference between using a model trained on a bunch of artists with similar styles, and basing it on just one who worked hard to create his own, distinct art. I don't want to open a debate on AI here, but basically I try to follow my own rules and morality. Anyways, as for the consistency, it's definitely a priority, that's the whole reason for why I use my own base sketches while genning, and that's why I will be converting old pictures to the new style over the next few updates.

As for hiring the artist, yea, obviously, money is an issue. I don't plan to spend my own funds on this project, it's a simple hobby for me, not a job or even something that I would want to turn into a job. That said, I don't really need the money it makes either, what some people already paid me I will probably use on sprites and sfx for the project or maybe take less hours at my day job to be able to work on it more regularly, one way or another it's gonna get invested back into it. If it ever becomes profitable enough, I would want to hire an artist to at least help with more complicated stuff. But again, I don't want to monetize it or anything so I doubt it will ever get to that level, thus AI.

Sounds good! 👍

biggest current bug is that entering mia's room any time after the prologue seems to trigger the day 1 event where you go to her room, reverting everything to the state of day 1.

also, the roomba task respawns every day, which i don't think is supposed to be the case? it seems to respawn the night of the day you do it.

the crack in the wall task and the gym training seem to sometimes leave you with a red screen effect, but not always, and I'm not sure what's making it sometimes happen and sometimes not.

there are also a few typos / writing mistakes here and there, I didn't keep track of all, but when mia talks to you about the roomba there is one, and when the stamina and day night cycles are being introduced there is one in the choices - it also still shows the prologue end text before the stamina and cycles stuff.

lastly, just my 2 cents, don't stress yourself over timelines and stuff like that, you don't need to share your estimates for how long future releases will take, just do things at your pace. Like this release wasn't "late", you just feel like it was because you shared your estimate expecting it to take less time than it did. Players won't lose interest even if releases take a while

Mia's room is obvious bug, will fix, same with me missing the prologue text. Lingering screen tint is more mysterious because as you said, sometimes it happen, sometimes it doesn't happen, and I honestly don't know why, had the same issue during my playtesting, but hoped it's just MTool acting out. Will try and brute force it somehow I guess.
Roomba task is supposed to respawn for now simply because it's one of like 3 activities avalaible, I don't want to make map any emptier than it already is, once I add more stuff it will be set as a one-time quest. Overall, I will post a quick fix either today or tomorrow, waiting whether any other bugs get reported. Edit: I didn't get any other bug reports for now, and I'm busy af coz holidays, since they aren't game breaking patch is coming out after Christmas, have a Merry one and log off.
As for the schedule, it's as much for the followers as it is for me, if I don't set myself deadlines I will never realistically finish it, so I will still try my best to stick to what I set for myself.
